The LAUSD has Decided to Postpone Implementation of Early Start Calendar

The budget crisis afflicting the State of California poses serious challenges to our District.  While the proposed tax election in June offers us the hope of some financial relief, the uncertain outcome of the election is likely to delay resolution of our collective bargaining negotiations, and also to cause reorganization of local school staffing and instructional plans during the months following the election.  We therefore are concerned that the Early Start calendar would not allow sufficient time to prepare for the orderly opening of school for the upcoming 2011-12 school year.

Deferring the Early Start instructional calendar to the 2012-13 school year will coincide with the elimination of year-round schedules that same year.   This will provide additional time for all of our students, families, communities and employees to prepare for a district-wide uniform calendar change.  Accordingly, for the 2011-12 school year, we will be planning once again to begin school around Labor Day.  The exact dates of that calendar will be announced soon.

We hope that this change in planning will assist the District in providing our students with a more orderly and productive 2011-12 school year.
