Basic Life Insurance

As an eligible District employee, you automatically receive basic life insurance coverage equal to $20,000. Effective January 1, 2009 the life insurance coverage is underwritten by Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife). The District pays the full cost of your basic life insurance, which provides a lump sum payment to your designated beneficiary if you die while employed with the District. The District will pay the premiums for your Basic Life Insurance coverage for up to 12 months if you are on an approved unpaid illness or industrial injury leave. It is your responsibility to keep your beneficiary designation up to date. To change your life insurance beneficiary, contact MetLife.

Filing A Claim

If you or a dependent dies while covered under the District's basic and/ or optional life insurance plan, the designated beneficiary should contact MetLife. They will assist the beneficiary with filing a claim for benefits under the plan.
