Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit

The optional life insurance plan also features an accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefit for yourself and your spouse/domestic partner. This benefit:

  • Doubles the death benefit payable if the covered individual dies as a result of a covered accident
  • Pays a benefit if you suffer a serious injury as a result of an accident. For example, the plan will pay 100% of the coverage if you were to lose both hands, or 50% of the coverage amount if you were to lose one hand.

There are no AD&D benefits for dependent children.

Accelerated Life Benefits

If you become terminally ill (i.e., life expectancy of less than 6 months), you may apply for an accelerated life benefit payment. This payment can help you defray the expenses associated with your condition while protecting other assets you may have. The amount of this benefit ensures that there will be funds remaining for your beneficiary upon your death. Remember that your family has access to EAP services during this time.

Filing A Claim

If you or a dependent dies while covered under the District's basic or optional life insurance plan, the designated beneficiary should contact ING Reliastar. They will assist the beneficiary with filing a claim for benefits under the plan.
