When the District hires you as a regular full-time employee, you automatically become a member of either:

• State Teachers Retirement System (STRS)- for certificated employees, or
• Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)- for classified employees
• Public Agency Retirement Services / Alternate Retirement System (PARS/ARS) - for Part-time, Seasonal and Temporary Employees

STRS, PERS and PARS / ARS are agencies of the State of California and not part of LAUSD. Substitutes and part-time employees whose assignments will extend for more than one work year also become members once they accumulate a minimum of 600 hours (STRS) or 1,000 hours (PERS) in any one school year. The personnel office will automatically enroll you in the appropriate retirement system.
