Living Well Benefits

The Employee Assistance Program

Regardless of which medical plan you choose, all employees are eligible to receive confidential counseling benefits through the District's Employee Assistance Program (EAP). You do not have to elect this option when you enroll; you and your eligible dependents are covered automatically. The EAP provides confidential, personal assessment and referral services through United Behavioral Health (UBH). (Please enter access code of LAUSD.)

The EAP can assist with such problems as:

  • Marital and family issues
  • Child/adolescent problems
  • Stress, anxiety and other emotional concerns
  • Alcohol and drug problems

UBH's staff includes health care professionals who can provide objective, professional guidance and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-866-312-3077. When you call, you will be connected to a supportive EAP Specialist-a clinician with a master's degree who is experienced in helping people identify the nature of their problems and finding the right resources to address them. The EAP Specialist will give you all the information you need to schedule a convenient appointment with a counselor who can typically meet with you within three days. During your appointment, you and the counselor will evaluate your needs. If you need additional help, you will be referred to the appropriate local resources. There is no charge for up to three sessions with an EAP specialist; however, the cost for additional counseling is your responsibility. These costs may be offset by the benefits provided under your medical plan.

The Employee Reimbursement Program

The Employee Reimbursement Program (ERP) provides assistance to employees who have had personal property vandalized or stolen from their work site. To be eligible for the ERP, you must register your personal property (e.g., laptop, CD player, books, teaching materials, etc.) at your work site. Property registration forms are available at all schools and offices. Then, if your registered property is later vandalized or stolen, the cost of repairing or replacing the equipment may be reimbursed. The cost of repairing or replacing items necessarily worn or carried at work (e.g., briefcase, handbag, watch, clothing) may be reimbursed only if reasonable precautions had been taken to secure the item and if the loss or damage are through no fault of the employee. If your employee-owned vehicle is stolen or vandalized while parked on or adjacent to District property, the Employee Reimbursement Program can reimburse the cost of the repair, but not damage caused by collision. The maximum reimbursement available per incident is either $500 or $1,000, depending on your bargaining unit agreement. A claim form may be obtained by calling (213) 241-3130.

Leaves of Absence

Taking a leave of absence may affect the District's contribution for the premium for your health care coverage, depending upon the type of leave and whether or not you continue to receive salary payments from the District. In general, if you are on a paid leave of absence, the District's contribution and your coverage will continue as if you were actively at work. If you are on an unpaid leave, the District will not continue to pay for your coverage with one exception: If you qualify for an approved unpaid leave under the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) or the California Family Rights Act (CFRA), the District's contribution for the premium for your health care coverage can be continued under the protection of these two laws.
