Universal Social-Emotional Interventions

Tier I: Universal Social-Emotional Interventions

Universal social-emotional interventions include school-wide mental health promotion and efforts to create a positive school culture and climate, a safe campus, school connectedness, and positive behavior.  Please refer to links below to find out more about resources and situations where these interventions may apply.

Empirically supported mental health promotion in schools has been associated with:

  • Improved emotional and behavioral functioning (Botvin, 2000; Greensberg et al, 1999; Horner & Sugai, 2000)
  • Reduction in discipline referrals
  • Improved attendance
  • Academic achievement (Knoff & Batsche, 1995)
  • Cost savings

Receiving school based mental health services has been shown to reduce course failures and drop out rates, and reduced referrals to special education (Bruns et al, 2004).  Universal interventions are designed to address risk factors in entire populations and enhance positive school environments.  Please visit the links below for more information about universal social-emotional interventions.  A few examples of these types of interventions include:

  • Developing strategies for classroom management
  • Psycho-education for parents
  • Staff development
  • Community collaborative meetings
