Background
Consistent with the results of research literature, the LAUSD is increasing its emphasis on professional development that is school-based, collaborative, and job-embedded. To measure the extent to which these efforts are successful, the professional development evaluation focuses on the professional development of three major curricular initiatives in the district: Reading First, the Secondary Literacy Plan, and the District Math Plan.

Project
Through observations of training events sponsored by both the central and the local districts as well as interviews of key administrators, the study will describe the professional development delivered to teachers, school administrators, and other implementers of the three programs. Data will be collected at two levels of administration: the local and central district. These data will then be linked to school and classroom level data collected through three other on-going evaluations: the Reading First Evaluation, the Secondary Literacy Plan Evaluation, and the District Math Plan Evaluation. Data from the four evaluation efforts will be analyzed with an emphasis being placed on instructional coaching and Professional Development Banked Time Tuesdays, and whether these efforts result in a change in teacher practice in the context of both elementary and secondary reading/language arts and math.
