Overview

The Career Development Branch, with its myriad of programs designed to help students explore their career interests and prepare them for employment, works very closely with many business, industry and employer partners throughout the Los Angeles area. LAUSD values the commitment of these partners, who understand the value of offering real-world opportunities for students before and after graduation as part of the larger mission to develop the workforce of tomorrow.

Business Partnerships

Business Partners are those who work with LAUSD schools and offices in order to help develop the employability of our students by providing resources that are often not available to in-school youth. These resoursces include donations of staff time and services, financial contributions, equipment, job-shadowing opportunities, mentoring and internships to our students, particularly those in Career Pathways (courses) and Career Academies.
Only with the participation and support of the business community can our schools produce graduates that are well-rounded and prepared to become engaged and productive citizens of the adult world.

Employer Partnerships
Employer Partners are those who provide Work Experience and employment opportunities to LAUSD students. By offering our students jobs via our First Break website, by employing our students in Work Experience programs, by collaborating with our Work Experience Teachers to provide valuable employment training, and/or by offering paid and non-paid internships to our youth, these partners provide invaluable experiences to our young people, many of whom have had no exposure to the world of work.
School-to-Career
School-to-Career, also known as School-to-Work, is the term used to describe the efforts of school district and partner agencies and entities to help students make active connections that allow them to transition from the school culture to the work culture.
Since many of our young people have no exposure or awareness to the difference in values and behaviors, School-to-Career is the vital link necessary for young people to gain employment, keep jobs and become successful members of the adult workforce.
UNITE-LA
As one of the founding partners of UNITE-LA, which was created as the umbrella entity to oversee School-to-Career in Los Angeles, LAUSD continues to work closely with UNITE-LA in our mutual mission to build programs and systems that make connections for youth so that they can achieve their academic, career and personal goals.
