Student Discipline and Expulsion Support Unit

Student Discipline Proceedings Unit (SDPU) staff advises and guides LAUSD school and office administrators or their designees regarding District student discipline (e.g., suspensions, opportunity transfers, expulsions, and policy and procedures.) The SDPU develops policies to ensure the fair and equitable treatment of students who face serious discipline and to guarantee District compliance with both Federal and State laws, as well as Board mandates.


SDPU staff helps students, parents, and/or representatives understand their rights, the laws, and District policy and practices regarding student discipline.  When a school principal recommends that a student be expelled, SDPU staff are responsible for conducting the State-mandated expulsion hearing and, when appropriate, recommend to the Board of Education the student's expulsion.
