What is Service-Learning
Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand. (Chinese Proverb)
Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy in which students learn and develop through active participation in high quality service that (LAUSD Bulletin BUL-307, Graduation Requirements Grades 9-12. July 28, 2003):
Meets the needs of a community;
Integrates into and enhances the rigorous academic curriculum;
Is aligned with the state standards;
Fosters civic responsibility;
Provides structured time for student reflection.
Service-learning builds school ties with the community, while providing meaningful, hands-on opportunities for students to learn. It can be effectively used in any subject/s and at any grade level.
"Service-learning is unique because it enables teachers to improve students' academic performance, sense of civic responsibility, self-confidence and workplace skills with a single teaching method. It links classroom lessons with real-life learning…..We firmly believe that it can become a central strategy for teaching and learning in our schools,"(Senator John Glenn. Chair, National Commission on Service-Learning).
