The Teacher Leadership Certification (TLC) Program is a cohort-based instructional leadership program designed to support aspiring teacher leaders in:

  • Understanding adults as learners to support professional learning communities
  • Accessing and using research to improve practice and student achievement
  • Promoting professional learning or continuous improvement
  • Facilitating improvements in instruction and student learning
  • Using data and assessments for school and district improvement
  • Improving outreach and collaboration with families and community
  • Advocating for student learning and the profession

Evening Classes are held from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. one evening per week.
Weekend Classes are held from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. six non-consecutive weekends per semester.

TLC Program Components

  • Job-embedded university coursework and field work
  • Extended learning assignments related to classroom instruction, mentoring, and leadership
  • Individualized mentor support
  • Four electronic portfolio leadership presentations
  • An expectation of a commitment to teach in LAUSD for a minimum of three years upon completion of the program

Who is eligible to apply?

The TLC program is being piloted district wide with Lead New Teacher Support Providers.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • Commitment to personal growth and learning
  • Reflective about personal teaching practice
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching
  • Ability to guide teachers through demonstrations, observations, and consultations to promote instructional excellence
  • Ability to analyze and discuss student achievement data and provide instruction
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to support teachers at schools in close proximity to your home school based on need

TLC Application and Selection Process Includes:

  • Submission of written application, letter of intent, resume, and principal acknowledgement form
  • Letter of recommendation from a current or former mentee
  • Letter of recommendation from UTLA Chapter Chair or grade level or department chairperson

Successful Completion of the TLC Assessment Phase of the Application Includes the following exercises:

  • Simulated Mentor Support Activity
  • 30 minute Instructional Interview
  • Scheduled On-Site Classroom Observation
