Vision Statement

The Los Angeles Unified School District will be known as one of the best urban school districts in this country. We will offer a stellar education to every student within a safe and caring environment. We will be among the first major urban districts to eliminate the achievement gap among all subgroups of our student population. We will dynamically engage parents and the community in the lives of our schools. The District’s schools will be the first and best choice of families in the Los Angeles area.

What's New

Memorandum 4942.0 outlining the roles and responsibilities of Pre-K--12 Science Lead Teachers for the 2009-2010 academic year is now available.  A brief online walk-through of the memo is now available online--just select the Science Lead Teacher on the left side of this screen to view these helpful vignettes.  Attachment A designating a school's SLT should have been faxed to (213)241-8491 by October 30, 2009 but due to complications in its uploading on Inside LAUSD, we are still accepting SLT designation forms.  The first Semester Activity Log (Attachment B) is due January 22, 2010.  Click below to see a sample of how to complete the attachments.

FYI - Diana Keeney, a former member of the elementary science team in Local District 1 is now enjoying retirement--but hasn't left her science roots too far behind her!  She's recently begun a training program with the Santa Monica Mountains Resource Conservation District that will qualify her as a "naturalist" to help lead school groups through the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve (and other locations, as well).  Meanwhile, she is involved with Audubon activities--click here to open the flyer describing free birdwalks at the Sepulveda Basin for beginners and families with school age children.  We are posting this opportunity as it may be of interest to teachers who want to encourage their students (and their own children!) to have outdoor nature experiences.   Kudos to you, Diana!

FYI - "Beautiful Science: Ideas that Changed the World" at the Huntington Library's Dibner Hall of Science. Don't miss this unique and exciting local opportunity to see science primary sources and examples of how great scientists communicate their ideas in writing! Books and manuscripts (including some science notebooks) by Aristotle, Darwin, Descartes, and Einstein, among others, are on display. Click here for more information.

FYI - Granada Hills Science Materials Center. Materials for check out have been consolidated from all the Science Centers and are now available at the Granada Hills Science Materials Center. Materials may be requested online and delivered to the middle or high school closest to your school. Click here for more information.

FOSS CA Teacher Prep Video collection now complete! Teacher Preparation Videos for all FOSS CA Kindergarten through Grade 5 modules are now available for online viewing. Click here to go to our FOSS page with links to each Teacher Prep Video.

Culturally Relevant and Responsive Education (CRRE) video segment using FOSS (grade 4) now online! The video segment was created by the Closing the Achievement Gap Branch and features LAUSD teacher, Tia Madkins, taking her students through an investigation from the FOSS Magnetism & Electricity module. Click here to link to our Resources page to view the entire science segment or selected pieces.

FOSS Audio Stories/Audio Resources Books now online! Stories and reading selections from the Science Resource Books for all modules K-5 are now available for listening online as a free resource. These are particularly helpful for students who may have difficulty accessing print. Click here to navigate to the FOSS CA website, choose a grade level and module, then click on the "Teacher Resources" button on the right hand side of the screen, and look for the icon for "Audio Stories" (K-2) or "Audio Resources Book" (3-5).
