Welcome to the Elementary Mathematics Program website. The website includes information regarding staffing, professional development offerings, content standards, periodic assessments, and other information relevant to the Elementary Mathematics Program. Additionally, the renewed Mathematics Instructional Guide (“the Guide”) is available.
The Guide was renewed to enable teachers to plan and provide students with a balanced mathematics curriculum as part of a coherent educational system. The Elementary Mathematics Program shares the District’s vision to provide students with:
-
A designed curriculum based on the Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools and the Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools.
-
A balanced curriculum that allows for teaching procedural skills, problem solving, and conceptual understanding.
-
Opportunities to learn in a coherent educational system in which the content standards, assessments, curriculum, and professional development are closely aligned to one another.
The renewed Guide includes concept lessons, which allow students to engage in rigorous mathematical tasks to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. Content standards are grouped around a big idea in each instructional quarter to focus on specific skills, problem solving, and conceptual understanding.
The Guide and other information highlighted in this website will support the improvement of skillful teaching and student achievement. You are invited to visit the website on a regular basis.

The District Mathematics Plan – 2001-2006 and Beyond. Recent test scores (California Standards Test, 2006) show that in the elementary grades there has been an increase in the percentage of students scoring proficient or above. Data for the last five years show dramatic growth for Grades 2 – 5. This growth is attributable to the use of standards-based instructional materials; professional development for teachers, coaches, and administrators; the use of periodic assessments to guide instruction; providing an effective intervention program for Grades 4 – 5; and curricular support for teachers by mathematics coaches at each school.
